Nugget Cinemas Marquee
Project Description
When the Hanover Improvement Society decided to upgrade the display capabilities of its Nugget Cinemas, it asked Charles Gibson Design for a concept that would replace its diminutive message box with a freestanding marquee capable of listing the full titles of the current films for its two (and now four) cinemas.
Responding to the classical detailing typical of Hanover’s main street signage and its architectural neighbors, this solution uses a freely interpreted entablature with polychromed columns and pediment to integrate the cinemas’ existing deco logo with a standard changeable message box. Color choices reflect both the immediate context of merchant awnings and masonry as well as the palette of the Cinemas’ logo.
In addition to design, CGD’s services included the coordination and supervision of a sign fabricator, structural engineer, wood and metal craftsmen, master painter, and granite supplier.
