Project Description
While heading the Hopkins Center Design Studio, Charles Gibson created a poster for an “imported” performance by the Wolf Trap Chamber Players. Following the group’s Dartmouth appearance, the poster, a simple two-color statement of Wolf Trap’s stylized wolf’s head logo, caught the attention of Catherine Filene Shouse, Wolf Trap’s visionary founder and lifelong patron of this pre-imminent National Park for the performing arts. She subsequently asked Charles Gibson to design a souvenir poster for their gift shop. Thinking that only one would be selected, the Designer presented two dramatically different concepts– a still life collage of 19th century engravings and an abstract interpretation of the Filene Center’s acoustical “fins”. Instead, Mrs. Shouse decided that both designs should be developed and printed for Wolf Trap.
In recognition of the posters’ excellence and in appreciation for the two concepts, Catherine Filene Shouse awarded the Wolf Trap Medal to the Designer.
