“Rooting for the Home Team”
Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site 1
Plymouth Notch, Vermont
Seasonal Exhibit
Project Description
The Vermont Division for Historic Preservation selected CGD to design and coordinate the production of an exhibition that would tell the story of First Lady Grace Coolidge’s passion for baseball. “Rooting for the Home Team: Grace Coolidge and Our National Pastime” documents Mrs. Coolidge‘s student days as scorekeeper for University of Vermont‘s team to her 1955 recognition as ”First Lady of Baseball” by the Boston Red Sox and Washington Nationals. A secondary theme traces the political role that baseball played in Calvin’s presidency, including the ritual of throwing out the first ball at season openers and posing on the White House lawn with the Washington Senators. CGD collaborated closely at all stages of the project with VDHP personnel, writer/sports consultant Jack DeGange, and principal fabricator, The Digital Image Works.
